Accelerating the Advancement of Green Hydrogen through Electrolyzer Technology
There is overwhelming worldwide interest and demand for hydrogen-based and water electrolysis systems as part of the global move towards decarbonization. The electrolyzer market is booming, and with our decades of expertise and role in New England’s regional Hydrogen Hub, SKYRE is at the center. We are accelerating the evolution of green hydrogen production through the advancement of electrolyzer technology powered through renewables.
SKYRE’s role in green hydrogen and electrolyzers often leads to the same questions. What is green hydrogen? What is electrolysis and how does it produce green hydrogen? How do these things relate to SKYRE’s mission and business goals?
Green hydrogen is generated using electrolysis within a unit called an electrolyzer. Electrolysis is the chemical process of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen — providing a clean stream of hydrogen. The key to green hydrogen is that the electricity used in its generation is derived entirely from renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydropower.
Hydrogen today (often referred to as grey hydrogen) is primarily created from natural gas, or methane, and produced with fossil fuels, using steam methane reformation. This method is considered the least efficient form of hydrogen production. In a world — and global economy — seeking to diminish and eventually eliminate the use of fossil fuels, there’s only one solution: green hydrogen produced using electrolyzers generated by renewables.
Green hydrogen has many advantages over fossil fuels. It can be produced from renewable energy sources thereby reducing and even eliminating greenhouse gasses. A hydrogen fuel cell has 3x the efficiency of a car powered by fossil fuels, with fewer moving parts leading to much less energy loss during its reaction. Widely considered the fuel of the future, green hydrogen is a pillar of decarbonization. There is essentially no way to meet net-zero emissions without it.
With increasing demand - and President Biden’s encouragement - many electrolyzer companies have sprung up. However, most are struggling with the advanced technology and scale-up. More and more of those companies are coming to SKYRE for our expertise as our scalable hydrogen electrolyzer is a patented novel design that eliminates manufacturing limitations and the tolerances associated with typical hydrogen production hardware. These companies are quickly realizing that no one in the world has more technical expertise or systems engineering experience than SKYRE – having built and delivered over 30,000 electrolyzer systems for 700 commercial, military, and aerospace customers. Our team collaborates with companies to take their designs to maturity and move them from lab to scale.
Our mission to decarbonize the world’s energy system is a big one, but the need has never been greater, and the goals have never been closer. Our focus and commitment to the advancement of electrolyzers will make SKYRE a key contributor to the acceleration of green hydrogen production and a major player in the roll-out of the hydrogen economy.
